Bringing Light and Life to the Heart of the Campus

University of Technology Sydney
Client - Aspect Studios
Designer - Forrest Gillham + Aspect Studios
Year - 2013

Context

In collaboration with Aspect Studios, Street & Garden delivered outdoor furniture for the UTS project in three stages spanning from late 2013 through 2014. Alumni Green, where the furniture is located on campus, consists of a large grassed area to act as a central gathering place for the university community, bordered by steel seating, and smaller more intimate garden pods outlined by timber and steel seating providing space for social or study-related activities.

Considerations

The seating design incorporates a custom faceted laser cut pattern and was developed into a modular system, to allow for ease of delivery and partial assembly on site. Materials include fabricated mild steel with vibrant green and fresh white powder coat finishes and spotted gum timber battens with an oiled finish.

Opportunities

Street and Garden was given the opportunity to develop the design which was conceptualised by Aspect Studios. This presented a productive method of collaborating with our clients to ensure we could develop the design in a way that was cost-effective, simple to manufacture and install, and in keeping with the original design intent. The inspiration and rationale behind this design are unique to the site and has become an integral part of the site identity.
