The brief for this project was to design a large bench seat that would become a focal point for the Miami Beach precinct.

While having an obvious function, the main goal was for the design to fit harmoniously into the foreshore. Having been given an initial concept sketch and suggestions from the client (Colin Brown – Gold Coast City Council) to create a large organic form, the bench took on various incarnations before settling on the final design. Taking inspiration from the coastal location, the design reflects many aspects of this environment. The overall ‘wave’ form, the ripple detail in the timber, and the curved leg detail all make reference to aspects of the ocean. In addition to this the ‘Wave’ bench also makes reference to the relaxed nature of the coastal lifestyle, with the design allowing people to decide how they wish to use the seat. They can choose whether to sit down and have a chat, lie back and soak up the sun, or stand up and check out the surf. The bench is intended to become part of the natural environment, and be used accordingly. The main philosophy behind the development of this design was to embrace all the aspects of the coastal environment and lifestyle. Accordingly the final outcome is very freeform in both shape and use. While the design makes reference to nature and is very organic in form, it is interesting to note how these forms were actually produced. The methods of production were vastly removed from the final outcome, relying heavily on CAD technology. After initial sketch development, much of the design process was conducted with the use of 3D computer modelling. The methodology for final production involved the use of a variety of metal rolling techniques to produce the bench framework. Automated CNC cutting was employed for the shaping of the timber slat details, with a laser etched template being produced to aid in the final assembly.
