Bulcock Beach

Client - Place Design Group

Design - Surya Graf, 2009

CONTEXT

In collaboration with Place Design Group, Street & Garden were engaged to develop a number of elements for the Bulcock Beach Esplanade, Caloundra, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. The brief for this project was to design an extensive suite of custom furniture that would complement the landscape architecture on site, while also harmoniously fitting into the foreshore location.

CONSIDERATIONS

The material palette for the suite included laser-cut/folded aluminium, stainless steel, and CNC machined hardwood timber. With forms inspired by coastal themes and aspects unique to the site, a custom laser-cut pattern was developed and applied as a cohesive element across all of the furniture elements. In addressing the harsh nature of the coastal location, the choice of an anodised surface treatment was a critical decision for both the longevity and ease of maintenance for these products. Throughout this design process Street & Garden were also mindful to take into consideration the environmental impact of material use wherever possible.

OPPORTUNITIES

Building on the thorough Masterplan developed by Place Design Group, the main focus of the furniture suite was to encourage accessibility and the communal use of the site. While this extensive suite included a variety of bench seats, table settings, bollards, and bicycle racks, this aspect of the brief also lead to a number of unique design applications including beach showers, high bar settings, stool seating, platform seating, and sculptural lighting/signage elements.
